The urgency clause under the Land Acquisition Act empowers the government to immediately take possession of land required for public purposes in cases of pressing need, bypassing the standard acquisition procedures.

On Thursday, the Greater Noida Authority announced its decision to invoke this clause to acquire four hectares of land for a 1.5-kilometre road project that has been stalled for over 15 years. The proposed road will link LG Chowk on Kasna Road to Knowledge Park 3, significantly easing traffic congestion in the area.

The project, originally proposed in 2010, has faced persistent delays due to resistance from the landowner — T-Series, a well-known music and film production company. The required four hectares are part of an 80-hectare land parcel owned by T-Series. While the authority aims to acquire the full stretch for broader developmental goals, T-Series is only willing to part with the four hectares necessary for the road and retain the remaining land.

“The road connecting LG Chowk to Knowledge Park must be constructed urgently. With the upcoming Noida International Airport, traffic is expected to increase substantially. This road will help decongest other key city routes and improve connectivity for commuters in Greater Noida, Noida, and those traveling towards the Yamuna Expressway,” said Ravi Kumar NG, CEO of the Greater Noida Authority.

T-Series originally purchased the land from farmers in 1987, before the Greater Noida Authority was formed. Under current rules, no development or construction can proceed without approved building plans from the authority. T-Series has opposed the acquisition, seeking permission to use the land for its own projects — a request the authority has consistently declined.
